Netflix Acquires Warner Bros. Discovery for $83 Billion
First Case of an OTT Platform Swallowing a Game Publisher

Netflix announced acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD)'s studio and streaming business for approximately $83 billion — including Warner Bros. Studios, HBO Max, and WB Games. Industry insiders describe this as "the largest media M&A since Disney-Fox" and "the first case of an OTT platform swallowing an entire traditional studio." Netflix sought gaming as its growth solution: unlike films consumed once, games enable repeat play, extending platform time and increasing subscriber lifetime value (LTV). Netflix already services 90+ mobile games, has established internal game studios, and tests cloud gaming — but lacked brand power and recognizable IP. WB Games provided everything Netflix lacked: Batman Arkham series, Mortal Kombat, LEGO game series, Hogwarts Legacy (Portkey Games from the Harry Potter universe), Shadow of Mordor (Lord of the Rings). The acquisition transforms the content industry: streaming, studios, and gaming under one roof (Netflix) signals a potential rule change for the entire content industry. For the gaming sector specifically, this raises the question of whether traditional game publishers will face increasing pressure from content platform giants leveraging IP, distribution, and subscription bundling advantages — fundamentally altering the relationship between game creation and content delivery.
