Developing a ''World Model'' to Power Robots
''Platform'' or Another Experiment?

Reports indicate Meta''s next target after augmented reality (AR) glasses is the robot market — not simply making and selling robots, but planning to license software like a robot operating system (OS) to other companies as the way to preemptively capture the market. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth stated in a recent interview: "The real bottleneck is software, not hardware." That is, the "Metabot" Meta is preparing is just the beginning — the essence is a strategy to dominate the robot ecosystem with platform software like Google''s Android.

Meta''s core project is the "World Model" — helping robots simulate physical real-world environments to implement precise hand movements and complex motions. As Bosworth mentioned, to reach the level of folding laundry or cleaning, software that reasons about and learns from real environments beyond simple AI commands is essential. Meta recruited former Cruise CEO Marc Whitten to build a robotics team, connecting with its Super Intelligence lab to create what amounts to the robot''s operating system.

Meta isn''t alone on this path: Apple is reportedly developing a tabletop robotic arm with a display; Tesla has repeatedly demonstrated humanoid robot "Optimus" but it still only operates in controlled environments; Google continues robot software research. Meta still hasn''t commercialized AR glasses "Project Orion," yet is now announcing large-scale investment in the new arena of robotics.

Meta''s strategy is clear: rather than competing directly in hardware, provide software platforms for other manufacturers to adopt — just as Google''s Android dominated the smartphone era through ecosystem control, Meta aims to play that role in the robot era. However, the market is not easy: many challenges remain from hardware to autonomy to safety, and competitors are already rushing to release robots. Most of all, there are questions about whether this is another "money-eating black hole" while Meta hasn''t yet turned AR glasses into a smartphone replacement. If Meta properly implements a "World Model"-based robot operating system, it could become the Google of the robot industry. For now, what''s clear is that Meta is still burning money looking for "the next big thing."
