Gradual Development from Infancy Stage to Early Stage to Maturity Stage
Currently Entering the Early Stage... "Until 2030"
Global Startups Entering and Focusing on Technology Development and Investment
Metaverse Maturity Stage from 2031, Standard Protocols Established

Source: Deloitte Insights 2022 No. 23 "Invitation to the Metaverse -- A Land of Opportunity." The metaverse industry development follows the same stages as other industries: Infancy Stage (걸음마 단계) -- Early Stage (초기단계) -- Maturity Stage (성숙단계). Infancy Stage (completed approximately 2015-2021): basic technology components developed; VR headsets become consumer products; blockchain enables digital ownership verification; gaming platforms (Roblox, Fortnite) demonstrate social virtual world engagement at scale; the stage is characterized by proof-of-concept rather than mass market products. Early Stage (approximately 2022-2030 per Deloitte 2022 analysis): global startups entering and focusing on technology development; enterprise metaverse applications for training, design, and collaboration proving ROI; hardware improving (lighter, higher resolution, lower cost headsets); standards beginning to emerge; consumer adoption expanding beyond early adopters; investment capital flowing into infrastructure and content. The current assessment (2025): Deloitte 2022 forecast placed metaverse in "entering early stage" -- the subsequent metaverse investment correction and slower-than-expected consumer adoption suggests the early stage is indeed in progress but at a slower pace than 2021 hype suggested; enterprise metaverse applications (Microsoft Mesh for hybrid work, Nvidia Omniverse for digital twins, immersive training simulations) are advancing more rapidly than consumer applications. Maturity Stage (from 2031): standard protocols established enabling interoperability between platforms; devices that are as comfortable and accessible as smartphones; mass consumer adoption of at least some metaverse use cases; economic models generating sustainable returns for platform operators and creators.
