Robotaxi Is Not Simply Transportation But a "Data Platform"
Tesla started pilot "Model Y-based robotaxi" service in Austin, Texas from June 22. The service operates in limited form for invited users, provided as a fully unmanned transportation system combining Tesla autonomous driving technology and vehicle hardware. June 22, 2025: Austin is expected to be recorded as the first city formally announcing the opening of the autonomous mobility era. Tesla commercializes "Robotaxi" service combining its electric SUV "Model Y" with advanced autonomous driving software -- significant as the first autonomous public transportation service provided for actual citizens, going beyond existing technology experiment level. Early Access Program operation: only invited users can download and use the dedicated robotaxi app; after logging in with Tesla account, users can input departure and destination within the designated geofenced area to call a vehicle. No safety driver in the vehicle -- fully autonomous operation. Service area: initially limited to specific Austin neighborhoods; service hours initially restricted to daytime. The data platform thesis: every robotaxi trip generates labeled real-world driving data (sensor readings, edge cases, intervention-free miles) that trains the next generation of FSD; at scale, the robotaxi fleet creates a data collection network that no competitor can match without equivalent deployed vehicles; Tesla estimates that for every minute of human-supervised FSD, it can now collect 10+ minutes of fully autonomous driving data through robotaxi operations.
