AI Detectors Lose Trust and Exit — 'Education Is Based on Trust'

Prestigious US university Vanderbilt University completely halted Turnitin world largest plagiarism checking service AI writing detection feature. Reliability controversy, student rights violations, and technical limitations combined -- the AI detector ultimately lost its place in education. April 2023: Turnitin launched a new feature identifying the "AI writing percentage" of submitted assignments. But within just a few months, major universities including Vanderbilt made decisions to deactivate it. As AI writing proliferated explosively, universities worldwide scrambled to prevent student misconduct and establish AI use guidelines -- but the appearance and disappearance of the AI detector exposed the gaps in this process. The reliability problems: (1) Algorithmic opacity -- Turnitin stated it uses "patterns commonly found in AI writing" as criteria but did not disclose what specific patterns or principles; (2) False positive problem -- numerous cases where non-native English speakers students work was incorrectly flagged as AI-written, due to simpler vocabulary and sentence structures; (3) Technical gaps -- Turnitin accurately detects raw ChatGPT output but cannot catch human-edited AI text or AI text modified by paraphrase tools; (4) Student rights violation -- students being unable to challenge false positive results without the right to explanation represents a due process problem. The broader question: the failure of AI detection tools does not mean AI use in education is undetectable -- it means the current generation of detectors is unreliable; education institutions are shifting toward assessment redesign (oral exams, in-class writing, process-based assessment) rather than continuing to invest in detection technology that generates both false positives and false negatives at rates that make it legally and pedagogically unsound.
