Voluntary Exit, But Departure at Critical Moment
Expressed Gratitude to Elon Musk: Learned to Distinguish Signal from Noise
AI Talent Drain and Humanoid Robot Industrialization Dilemma
June 7, 2025: Milan Kovac, Vice President overseeing Tesla humanoid robot project Optimus, abruptly resigned. He stated he made the most difficult decision and is stepping down to spend time with family. The significance beyond personal reasons: Kovac joined Tesla autonomous driving team (Autopilot) in 2016 and served as a core engineer for many years; from 2022 led the Optimus Project for humanoid robot development from zero. He was the leader most responsible for taking Tesla humanoid robot from concept to production-ready system. Why the timing matters: Tesla announced in 2024 that Optimus would enter limited production in 2025 and mass production by 2026; the chief is departing precisely when the most critical execution phase (scaling from prototype to manufacturing) is beginning; either Kovac did not believe the manufacturing timeline was achievable or the departure reflects internal disagreements about direction. Musk publicly thanked Kovac on X and wished him well -- an unusually warm public farewell that may reflect genuine respect, or may be calculated to prevent a damaging departure narrative. The AI talent retention challenge: Tesla AI talent competes with Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta for the world most capable AI researchers and engineers; Tesla compensation (primarily stock-based) has been less competitive since the stock decline from 2021 peaks; the combination of intense work culture, controversial CEO, and compensation competition creates ongoing talent retention challenges for Tesla AI and robotics programs.
