The Vision and Four Meanings of the Metaverse

Vision: the metaverse as the successor to the current internet -- a fully immersive, persistent, shared virtual space that is as economically and socially significant as the physical world. Four meanings of the metaverse: (1) New Reality -- the metaverse is not a simulation of physical reality but a new reality with its own physics, aesthetics, and possibilities; in the metaverse, you can fly, teleport, change your appearance instantly, and be in multiple places simultaneously; the creative freedom enabled by virtual reality enables experiences impossible in the physical world; (2) New Regulation through DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) -- traditional regulation is imposed by governments; in the metaverse, platform governance through DAOs gives token holders voting rights on platform rules; this is a new form of democratic governance specifically designed for virtual contexts; (3) Platform-Created Content and User-Created Content coexistence -- unlike physical world where governments create laws and physical infrastructure, metaverse governance involves both platform rules (set by builders) and emergent community norms (created by users); (4) New Wisdom through Virtual Humans -- AI-powered virtual beings in the metaverse can accumulate knowledge and wisdom at machine speed; the interaction between human wisdom and virtual human knowledge creates new forms of intelligence synthesis. Entry methods: digital means (current -- VR headset, smartphone AR); emerging -- Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) such as Neuralink; the BCI endpoint represents the ultimate merger of human consciousness and digital environment, enabling truly immersive experience without physical device mediation.
