Possible Under-Display Face ID
Multiple international media reports indicate Apple is developing a large-screen foldable iPad. The device, when unfolded, would be approximately the size of two iPad Pros placed side by side, with significant focus on solving the crease problem that has plagued other foldable devices. The screen size is expected to be between 18.8 and 19 inches, targeting a 2028 launch.
According to MacRumors and Bloomberg on the 10th (local time), Apple is preparing a foldable iPad with new display technology minimizing screen creases. Currently in early R&D stages, it will likely be a premium product differentiated from the existing iPad Pro lineup. While Apple hasn't fully eliminated creases, prototypes from the design team have reportedly improved to near-invisible levels. The foldable iPad is expected to feature an 18.8-inch foldable display and integrate Face ID receivers and transmitters beneath the screen using "Metal Superstructure Lens" technology — suggesting Apple is developing under-display Face ID for a complete full-screen experience. Some observers anticipate a 2-in-1 hybrid combining iPad and MacBook functionality with a new interface mixing iPadOS and macOS elements.
LG is set to begin mass production of 20.2-inch or 18.8-inch foldable display panels in Q4 this year, lending credibility to a possible 2027 OLED foldable iPad Pro. Apple is also reportedly developing a foldable iPhone — an in-folding style with a screen larger than iPhone 16 Pro Max featuring Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID, with a "book-style" form factor minimizing creases. Apple has not officially announced any foldable device, but with Samsung, Google, and Lenovo already offering such products, Apple's entry is expected to significantly impact the market.
