Opportunity or Exploitation for Studio Ghibli?
Now Is the Timing for a Ghibli Reboot
In recent years, the global content market pivoted unexpectedly — not cutting-edge tech but an old visual style quietly infiltrated then explosively spread. People called it "Ghibli-style." Across Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube vlogs, and KakaoTalk profiles, we repeatedly encounter Ghibli's afterimages — blue hills, soft watercolor backgrounds, girls walking under trees, fabric blowing in wind. Ghibli is everywhere, yet Studio Ghibli itself is absent from the center of this trend.
The craze began without Ghibli's agency. After Netflix streamed Ghibli's complete works, Gen Z encountered Ghibli's world for the first time and fell deeply. They found deeper comfort in Ghibli's quiet emotional lines than Disney's emotional excess. Yet Ghibli remained silent — and the industry quietly asked: "What will Ghibli do now?" Business opportunity: this is a rare moment where consumers globally are voluntarily consuming, reproducing, and sharing Ghibli style — IP has become the language of emotion. The danger: if left unaddressed, AI will absorb and countless similar contents will erase Ghibli's traces. The legal paradox: when Midjourney or DALL-E generates "Ghibli-style" images, current copyright law doesn't protect "atmosphere" or "style" as abstract aesthetics — Ghibli cannot legally claim copyright even as its sensibility is appropriated.
Three strategic responses: (1) Trademark registration of Ghibli's visual style — colors, composition, character presentation, musical atmosphere as design trademarks; (2) Official collaboration with AI platforms providing "official Ghibli presets" to maintain brand control; (3) Global IP notarization system via blockchain-based DID. Business strategy: OSMU (One Source Multi Use) across theme parks, games, AI collaborative content, branded collaborations, educational animation. "Ghibli-style can be created by anyone, but true Ghibli can only be created by Ghibli" — this identity must be re-declared. "The time for Ghibli's reboot is now — silence risks becoming merely a 'referenced original' in the world's memory."
