Field Report -- AI and DePIN Changing the Topography of the Digital Economy: On April 27, 2025, DePINA Korea Cohort 0 Bootcamp was held at Sogang University Gavriel Hall G109. DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) represents the convergence of Web3 incentive models with real-world hardware infrastructure -- participants who deploy and maintain physical infrastructure (sensors, wireless routers, computing hardware) earn tokens as compensation; this creates a community-owned alternative to corporate-owned infrastructure. Speakers at the bootcamp: Sogang University Metaverse Graduate School Dean Hyun Dae-won and Professor Kim Tae-hun; Aethir co-founder Mark Rydon (decentralized cloud computing for AI workloads); ZetaCube CTO Jeong Ho-seok (decentralized data infrastructure); IoTeX Manager Jayne Kim (IoT and DePIN coordination). The DePIN significance for Korea: Korea has one of the highest densities of IoT-connected devices and high-speed internet infrastructure globally; DePIN models could enable Korean individuals and businesses to monetize their excess network capacity and hardware resources; the intersection with AI is particularly interesting as DePIN networks can provide decentralized compute for AI inference without requiring centralized cloud infrastructure.
