Presence + PSI + Paracommunication Combined... Structure Where ''Relationship Experience'' Converts to Consumption
Donations Are Not Payments but Messages... Emotion, Existence, and Interaction Are Monetized
In live streaming environments, viewers sending "star balloons" (virtual gifts) to streamers cannot be explained as simple consumption — this is closer to social behavior performing and transmitting meaning in a relationship rather than product purchase. "Sending money" is not mere expenditure but an act requiring interpretation as "expressing a relationship." Three-theory framework: (1) Presence as starting point — viewers don''t simply watch a video but feel they exist together within the live broadcast happening in real-time; chat flowing in real-time, the streamer responding immediately, sharing the same time flow — viewers transform from observers to participants. This creates the sensation "I am in that space now" — the foundation for all subsequent relationship formation; (2) Parasocial Interaction building on presence — viewers begin feeling they are in a relationship with the streamer even without actual interaction; repeated viewing reinforces intimacy; viewers form the emotion "that person knows me" or "we are connected to some degree." At this stage star balloons emerge not as a simple function but as a means to express the relationship — viewers change from passive consumers to beings wanting to contribute to the relationship; (3) Paracommunication — the relationship is interpreted as meaningful communication; when viewers send star balloons, that act is recognized not as mere monetary transfer but as a message (encouragement, interest, expression of existence); when the streamer responds to this, the act is experienced as complete interaction. Being named, receiving expressions of gratitude — these provide the viewer the conviction "I exist within this relationship," reinforced through repetition. Platform design implication: the star balloon (and equivalent systems on other platforms: YouTube Super Chat, Twitch Bits, TikTok gifts) is not simply a monetization feature but a relationship expression infrastructure — designing these systems to maintain the emotional authenticity of the interaction (so viewers feel genuinely connected rather than just purchasing attention) is the key to sustainable creator economy platforms.
