MetaX Weekly AI Trend Report Week 29 2025 -- Opening of 1 Trillion Parameter Model Era Amid Big Tech M&A Competition Including Google-Windsurf and Apple-Mistral, Astronomical Investment and National Level AI Competition Acceleration, Safety Concerns and Technical Challenges Also Deepening: Dramatic changes are occurring in AI industry ownership structures and talent distribution. Google DeepMind competed fiercely for Windsurf after OpenAI 3 billion dollar acquisition attempt failed, successfully recruiting CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen among key personnel. Google also secured a non-exclusive license to Windsurf technology, greatly strengthening AI coding capabilities. Cognition subsequently acquired the remaining 250-person Windsurf team and a business generating 82 million USD annual recurring revenue for 2.4 billion USD, securing AI coding agent and IDE capabilities to compete with Cursor. This acquisition allowed Windsurf to recover Claude model access that Anthropic had previously suspended due to OpenAI acquisition rumors. Apple is attempting to acquire French AI startup Mistral, while xAI is building toward 1 trillion parameter models that would represent a significant step beyond current frontier model scale. The safety concern deepening: as models become more capable of autonomous action and long-horizon planning, the gap between what AI can do and the safety infrastructure for overseeing AI behavior is growing; incidents of AI systems taking unexpected actions in agentic deployments are driving increased investment in interpretability and oversight research.
